New Curriculum and Universal Screening
Progress is being made and I am pleased with the products that were developed this summer! We now have draft RSU 24 curriculums for English Language Arts and Mathematics as well as Universal Screening Tools for K-10 Reading and Mathematics.
The curriculums are available on the “Curriculum” page of our RSU 24 website. Please be sure to read the introduction as well as the Essential Skills. We will be using NWEA’s Measures of Academic Progress for Reading and Mathematics as Universal Screening for students in grades 2 – 10. Other universal screen tools have been developed for grades K-2. (Teachers can find these in the “Assessment” folder in the “Professional Development” conference in First Class.)
We will be using these curriculum materials and universal screening tools during the 2010-2011 school year. We will meet in grade level and content area teams throughout the year to monitor and support progress.
Next steps include developing:
A tool to screen students in grades 10 – 12 for “progress towards graduation requirements” 3 times per year. During the 2010-2011 school year, a High School RTI subcommittee will meet to set criteria based on student progress towards graduation requirements.
Tools for K-12 Writing. During the 2010-2011 school year, universal screen tools for writing will be developed through the RTI Team and Subcommittees (may include NWEA Language Usage and district-wide writing prompts and scoring rubrics).
Curriculum and universal screen tools for K-12 behavior through our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) Grant.
Health and Physical Education Curriculums.
A District-wide Comprehensive Guidance Program.
We’ll also be:
Refining the ELA and Math curriculums; adding technology components and assessments.
Participating in two grant-funded opportunities focused on middle level and high school science. Keep your eyes out for more information about Acadia Partners/SERC’s “Making Sense of Data” project and the University of Maine’s “Physical Sciences Partnership.”
Becoming familiar with and using techniques from Teach Like a Champion.
Working towards achieving our district literacy and math goals.
I’m looking forward to a busy and productive year!
